This study was designed to improve our understanding of, and mechanistically simulate, nitrate (NO3) dynamics in a steep 9.8 ha rural headwater catchment, including its production in soil and delivery to a stream via surface and subsurface processes. A two‐dimensional modelling approach was evaluated for (1) integrating these processes at a hillslope scale annually and within storms, (2) estimating denitrification, and (3) running virtual experiments to generate insights and hypotheses about using trees in streamside management zones (SMZs) to mitigate NO3 delivery to streams. Total flow was mathematically separated into quick‐ and slow‐flow components; the latter was routed through the HYDRUS software with a nitrogen module designed for constructed wetlands. Flow was monitored for two years. High surface‐soil NO3 concentrations started to be delivered to the stream via preferential subsurface flow within two days of the storm commencing. Groundwater NO3‐N concentrations decreased from 1.0 to less than 0.1 mg l?1 from up‐slope to down‐slope water tables, respectively, which was attributed to denitrification. Measurements were consistent with the flushing of NO3 mainly laterally from surface soil during and following each storm. The model accurately accounted for NO3 turnover, leading to the hypotheses that denitrification was a minor flux (<3 kg N ha?1) compared to uptake (98?127 kg N ha?1), and that SMZ trees would reduce denitrification if they lowered the water table. Temporal variation of suspended sediment transport in the Koga catchment,North Western Ethiopia and environmental implications 下载免费PDF全文
Event sediment transport and yield were studied for 45 events in the upstream part of the 260 km2 agricultural Koga catchment that drains to an irrigation reservoir. Discharge and turbidity data were collected over a period of more than a year, accompanied by grab sampling. Turbidity was very well correlated with the sediment concentrations from the samples (r = 0.99), which allowed us to estimate the temporal patterns of sediment concentrations within events. The hysteresis patterns between discharge and sediment concentrations were analysed to provide insight into the different sediment sources. Anticlockwise patterns are the dominant hysteresis patterns in the area, suggesting smaller contributions of suspended sediment from the river channels than from the hillslopes and agricultural areas. Complicated types of hysteresis patterns were mostly observed for long events with multiple peaks. For a given discharge, sediment yields in August and September, when the catchment was almost completely covered with vegetation, were much smaller than during the rest of the rainy season. The hysteresis patterns and timing suggest that the sediment availability from the agricultural areas and hillslopes affects sediment yields more strongly than does peak discharge. Two distinct types of sediment rating curves were observed for the season when the agricultural land was covered with vegetation and when it was not, indicating the dominating contribution of land use/cover to sediment yields in the catchment. Iron oxide–apatite (IOA) deposits, often referred to as Kiruna-type iron ore deposits, are known to have formed from the Proterozoic
to the Tertiary. They are commonly associated with calc–alkaline volcanic rocks and regional- to deposit-scale metasomatic
alteration. In the Bafq District in east Central Iran, economic iron oxide–apatite deposits occur within felsic volcanic tuffs
and volcanosedimentary sequences of Early Cambrian age. In order to constrain the age of formation of these ores and their
relationship with the Early Cambrian magmatic event, we have determined the U–Pb apatite age for five occurrences in the Bafq
District. In a 206Pb/238U vs. 207Pb/235U diagram, apatite free of or poor in inclusions of other minerals plots along the Concordia between 539 and 527 Ma with four
out of five samples from one deposit clustering at the upper end of this range. For this deposit, we interpret this cluster
to represent the age of apatite formation, whereas the spread towards younger ages may reflect either minor Pb loss or several
events of IOA formation. Apatite with inclusions of monazite (±xenotime) yields disturbed systems with inclusions having developed
after formation of the iron ore–apatite deposits, possibly as late as 130–140 Ma ago. Obtained apatite ages confirms that
(IOA) and the apatite-rich rocks (apatites) of the Bafq district formed coevally with the Early Cambrian magmatic (-metasomatic)

The method of geometric-astronomical leveling is presented as a suited technique for the validation of GNSS (Global Navigation
Satellite System) heights. In geometric-astronomical leveling, the ellipsoidal height differences are obtained by combining
conventional spirit leveling and astronomical leveling. Astronomical leveling with recently developed digital zenith camera
systems is capable of providing the geometry of equipotential surfaces of the gravity field accurate to a few 0.1 mm per km.
This is comparable to the accuracy of spirit leveling. Consequently, geometric-astronomical leveling yields accurate ellipsoidal
height differences that may serve as an independent check on GNSS height measurements at local scales. A test was performed
in a local geodetic network near Hanover. GPS observations were simultaneously carried out at five stations over a time span
of 48 h and processed considering state-of-the-art techniques and sophisticated new approaches to reduce station-dependent
errors. The comparison of GPS height differences with those from geometric-astronomical leveling shows a promising agreement
of some millimeters. The experiment indicates the currently achievable accuracy level of GPS height measurements and demonstrates
the practical applicability of the proposed approach for the validation of GNSS height measurements as well as the evaluation

Independent calendar year chronologies are a basic requirement for the establishment of high resolution land-ice teleconnections.
The annually laminated Meerfelder Maar record provides both an independent chronology, established by varve counting, and
high resolution lithological proxy data for the period of the last Glacial/Interglacial transition. These data reveal a series
of four periods of climatic deterioration coinciding with negative isotopic deviations in the GRIP record signal, thus demonstrating
the synchronicity of environment changes in Western Germany and temperature shifts in Greenland. The terrestrial data supports
a further sub-division of the event stratigraphy based on the GRIP core, by introducing the cold event GI-1c2 between 13 500
and 13 400 calendar years BP. Multiproxy analyses reveal that the environmental response at Meerfelder Maar was not linear
throughout the Lateglacial but was modified by local processes. A change in the response of the lake environment to climate
deterioration was observed during sub-stage GI-1b (Gerzensee oscillation), the only event with gradual rather than abrupt
transitions. The two-fold character of the Younger Dryas as seen in the GRIP record is more pronounced in the Meerfelder Maar
record. This lithological signal occurred with a delay of 60 years to the GRIP signal, and has been linked to a shift in the
catchment. It is proposed that the trigger for this shift was a trend towards a more humid second half of the Younger Dryas.
