Combined effects of matrix plastic compressibility and void shape are investigated for ductile porous materials. To this end, a spheroidal volume containing a confocal spheroidal (prolate or oblate) void subjected to uniform strain rate boundary conditions has been first studied. A Green type matrix is chosen as a prototype for investigating effects of plastic compressibility. This is carried out by using a kinematics limit analysis theory from which a closed‐form expression of the macroscopic criterion is established for the considered class of materials. These results are then extended to ductile porous materials made up of a green matrix containing randomly oriented spheroidal voids. In the framework of a two‐step homogenization procedure, the obtained results are implemented to describe the macroscopic behavior of double porous materials involving spherical voids at the microscale and randomly oriented and distributed spheroidal voids at the mesoscale. For validation purpose, the new derived criteria are assessed and validated by comparing their predictions to available upper bounds and numerical data from literature. Exploration and exploitation of coal seams is one of the major resources for the energy sector in any country but at the same time water filled voids/water logged areas in the old workings of these seams are very critical problems for the coal mining industry. In such situations, disasters like inundation, landslides, collapsing of the old seams may occur. In this regard, it is necessary to find out the water saturated/water filled voids and zones in the mining areas. Since no established technique is available to find such zones, an experimental study using Electrical Resistivity Imaging (ERI) has been carried out in one of the coal mining areas near Dhanbad, to find out the feasibility of finding the barrier thickness and the water logged area in underground coal mines. The area under study forms part of Jharia coalfield in Dhanbad district, Jharkhand state. The coal bearing rocks of Barakar Formation of Lower Permian age (Gondwana period) occur in the area under a thin cover (10 m to15 m) of soil and or alluvium. Coal bearing Barakar Formations consist mainly of sandstone of varying grain size, intercalation of shale and sandstone, grey and carbonaceous-shale and coal seams. Since the water saturation reduces the resistivity of a formation to a large extent, water filled voids and old coal workings are expected to have significant resistivity contrast with the surrounding host rock. Hence, ERI technique was applied in such an environment as this technique uses high-density data acquisition both laterally and vertically by using multiple number of electrodes. Along with ERI, mise-à-la-masse (also called charged body) technique was also employed at one of the promising sites to find out the connectivity of water logged areas and also detection of these old workings from the surface measurements was analyzed. The interpreted 2D resistivity sections have clearly indicated the water bearing zone(s) along the profile which was well confirmed with the existing water level in the nearby borewells. On the other hand, this technique did not identify the size of the coal pillar and gallery (air filled voids), which might be due to the small size of the voids (i.e. about 2 m × 2 m) below a depth of 15m and more but have indicated altogether as a high resistive zone ranging from 600–1000 Ohm-m.  相似文献

The observability of a galaxy population inside of voids is estimated by assuming a void population similar to the one of nearby field galaxies in density as well as in morphological mixture. Obviously an extension to apparent magnitudes beyond m = 22 for a complete sample of galaxies in a sufficient large field is needed to get reliable information on a void population.  相似文献

Abstract

Laboratory tests were conducted on compacted marine sediments to study the effect of salt concentration of permeating fluid on its permeability characteristics. Deep sea sediment samples were collected from water depths varying from 3700 to 4500 m off Mauritius coast. Liquid limit and plasticity index varied widely from 45 to 75 and 10 to 35, respectively. Permeability was found at different void ratios with distilled water and 0.2, 0.4, and 0.8 N NaCl solutions as permeating fluid. It was found that permeability increases with an increase in salt concentration for a given void ratio. This is explained by diffused double layer theory. Also, the rate of increase in permeability decreases with increase in salt concentration. The effect of salt concentration seemed to be less at higher void ratios.  相似文献

The deleterious effect of moisture in the microstructure of asphalt mixtures, usually referred to as moisture damage, has been recognized as a main cause of early deterioration of asphalt pavements. The initiation and evolution of moisture‐related deterioration is strongly influenced by the internal air void structure of asphalt mixtures. Despite its importance, the majority of works conducted on the micromechanical modeling of asphalt mixtures overlook the role of the air void structure, mainly because of its high complexity and variability. This paper explores the influence of air void variability on the performance of asphalt mixtures subjected to moisture diffusion processes. A stochastic modeling technique based on random field theory was used to generate internal distributions of physical and mechanical properties of the asphalt matrix of the mixture that depend on probable air voids distributions. The analysis was conducted by means of a coupled numerical micromechanical model of moisture damage. The results showed that the variability and distribution of air voids are decisive in determining the moisture‐dependent performance of asphalt mixtures. Furthermore, it was also shown that a stochastic characterization of the diverse air void configurations is a feasible and useful approach to better represent and understand mechanically related deterioration processes in asphalt mixtures. In order to improve the reliability of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) method in identifying subsurface sinkholes and karst cavities, laboratory investigations have been performed. The main objective of this work was to examine the relationship between horizontal/vertical voids dimensions and wavelengths of various antennas, and the corresponding GPR responses. Emphasis was given to the investigation of the factors that cause the appearance of reverberation phenomena in the signal pattern.The tests were conducted in 5 m × 10 m area by 2-m-deep trench filled with homogenous, dry sand. The voids models (empty fiberglass cylinders in diameters of 0.6 m, 1.0 m, 1.5 m and 2.4 m, with various heights) were buried vertically with their tops at depths of between 0.7 and 1.5 m. Investigations were performed for the various model conditions by towing 500, 300 and 100 MHz antennas along a pre-established grid, for the various model conditions.The GPR data collected using the 500 MHz bistatic antenna above the 1.0-m- and the 1.5-m-diameter cylinders, and using the 300 MHz bistatic antenna above the 1.5-m-diameter cylinder, confirmed the presence of a reverberation phenomenon, i.e. a strong convex signal pattern, containing a series of high amplitude extending oscillations with reduced frequency.Based on past practical GPR experience of void detection and presently obtained experimental data, two rules of thumbs may be adopted for the prediction of the appearance of resonant radar pictures:
1. The void diameter larger than the wavelength in air of the antenna used.
2. The vertical size of the empty void not significantly smaller than its horizontal dimension.
The strong reverberations generated by the inner surface of the void targets were found to approximate standing waves generated in cylindrical waveguides and waveguide resonators. The theoretical, experimental and practical results obtained concur.  相似文献

潜孔锤的钻进过程是一个高度非线性、大变形、破碎岩石的过程,利用非线性有限元程序ANSYS/LS-DY-NA研究了在凿岩过程中,球齿凿入不同空隙率(塑性体积应变)岩石的冲击力特性。结果表明,岩石空隙率对钻头球齿与岩石之间的凿入冲击力幅值有很大影响,随着空隙率的增大,球齿凿入的冲击力显著减小,而对活塞与钻头间冲击力幅值影响甚微。通过ANSYS/LS-DYNA瞬态冲击数值模拟,形象地再现了潜孔锤钻凿系统冲击岩石发生侵入破坏的物理过程,为冲击碎岩瞬态研究提供了一个有效的分析方法。  相似文献

根据混凝土材料动态响应的特点,将常规弹速范围内混凝土球形空腔的动态响应区域划分为弹性区、开裂区和孔隙压实区,孔隙压实区的混凝土材料采用两段式线性状态方程和考虑拉伸破坏的Mohr-Coulomb屈服准则描述。运用相似变换方法推导了球形空腔动态膨胀响应的理论表达式,采用Runge-Kutta-Felhberg数值方法给出了球形空腔动态响应的数值解。结果表明,运用该理论建立的侵彻模型与试验结果具有良好的一致性。  相似文献

Using the method of searching for arbitrary shaped voids in the distribution of volume-limited samples of galaxies from the DR5 SDSS survey, we have identified voids and investigated their characteristics and the change in these characteristics with decreasing M lim (from ?19.7 to ?21.2, H 0 = 100 km s?1 Mpc?1)—the upper limit on the absolute magnitude of the galaxies involved in the construction of voids. The total volume of the 50 largest voids increases with decreasing M lim with a break near M* = ?20.44—the characteristic value of the luminosity function for SDSS galaxies. The mean overdensity in voids increases with decreasing M lim also with a weak break near M*. The exponent of the dependence of the volume of a void on its rank increases significantly with decreasing M lim starting from M lim ~ ?20.4 in the characteristic range of volumes, which reflects the tendency for greater clustering of brighter galaxies. The averaged profile of the galaxy overdensity in voids has a similar pattern almost at all M lim. The galaxies mostly tend to gravitate toward the void boundaries and to avoid the central void regions; the overdensity profile is flat in the intermediate range of distances from the void boundaries. The axial ratios of the ellipsoids equivalent to the voids are, on average, retained with changing M lim and correspond to elongated and nonoblate void shapes, but some of the voids can change their shape significantly. The directions of the greatest void elongations change chaotically and are distributed randomly at a given M lim. The void centers show correlations reflecting the correlations of the galaxy distribution on scales (35–70)h ?1 Mpc. The galaxy distribution in the identified voids is nonrandom—groups and filaments can be identified. We have compared the properties of the galaxies in voids (in our case, the voids are determined by the galaxies with absolute magnitudes M abs < M lim = ?20.44, except for the isolated galaxies) and galaxies in structures identified using the minimum spanning tree. A bimodal color distribution of the galaxies in voids has been obtained. A noticeable difference is observed in the mean color indices and star formation rates per unit stellar mass of the galaxies in dense regions (structures)—as expected, the galaxies in voids are, on average, bluer and have higher log (SFR/M star). These tendencies become stronger toward the central void regions.  相似文献

Backfilling of mine voids is mandatory to avoid subsequent ground stability problems in the form of subsidence. River sand and mill tailings have been widely used since a long time as backfilling materials. However, with a strict regulation banning river sand mining in India, research for developing alternative engineering materials substituting sand has gained importance. In the present study four fly ash composite materials (FCMs) was developed from the fly ash obtained from a captive thermal unit of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP). The main constituent of the composite were fly ash, lime and gypsum. Detailed physical, and engineering properties were determined for the FCMs. Significant increases in the compressive strength were obtained after 56 days of curing time. A detailed SEM studies was undertaken to account for the increase in strength with time. The fly ash composite developed from RSP has potential to be used as substitute to sand for backfilling the mine voids.  相似文献
