In the Haushi-Huqf (Eastern Central Oman) as in other parts of the Arabian platform, a major sedimentary break is recorded between the Early Aptian carbonates (Shu'aiba Formation) and the Albian orbitolinid-rich marls (Nahr Umr Formation). The unconformity corresponds to a succession of events: (1) a brusque interruption of the regressive sequence of the Shu'aiba limestone (algae and small rudistid build-ups); (2) a stratigraphic gap related to the Late Aptian; (3) the development of a thick ferruginous crust (hardground) that covered the top surface of the Shu'aiba; the hardground is related to a forced flooding surface; (4) the Shu'aiba was rapidly drowned and buried under the Nahr Umr marls. Moreover, the Shu'aiba limestone was subject to faulting NW–SE-trending normal faults before lithification and formation of the ferruginous crust. The faulting episode is clearly dated: post-Early Aptian and pre-Albian. The signification of the faulting remains hypothetical. The syndiagenetic NW–SE normal faults may correspond to ‘en echelon’ faults, combined with transcurrent fault movements (for example the Haushi-Nafun Fault). In central Tunisia, a synsedimentary tectonic episode has been pointed out through the tectonic movements affecting the Late Palaeocene–Early Eocene successions. This tectonic episode has controlled, to a large extent, the palaeogeographic setting of the area during that period and confirmed the important effect induced by the Pyrenean shortening phase on the edge of the African plate, which obviously has witnessed a common history with the southern part of the European plate. This study seeks to determine suspended-matter flux of the Isère at Grenoble, one of the most important rivers of the northern French Alps. Since 1994, and especially 1996, systematic samplings of the left bank make it possible to follow in one point the variations of suspended particles and matter (SPM) of this river. But from a single measurement, sometimes not very representative of the whole observable concentrations within the section, it remains still difficult to estimate precisely the SPM flux. The results of this study show in particular the successive appearance of several turbidity gradients, whose occurrence is explained mainly by the hydrological and hydro-sedimentary dynamics of this river. The estimate of these gradients thus makes it possible to extrapolate specific measurements more easily and consequently to daily define the quantities of suspended matter exported by the Isère. Since 1996, the results show a very high flow, specific of the Isère at Grenoble, variable between 124 and more than 460 t km?2 yr?1. To cite this article: D. Dumas, C. R. The evolution and the internal architecture of an estuary type sand ridge has been studied with a set of bathymetric data recorded during the last two centuries and with a dense grid of recent very high resolution seismic profiles. Bathymetric data of the so-called, Longe de Boyard sand ridge, displays sand losts due to wave and tide erosion. Internal geometry, through seismic profile analysis, indicates two main phases of deposition recording both, a recent high energy environment and an older low energy one, respectively. Such an evolution is believed to record changes in sedimentation processes mainly related to the end of the Holocene transgression (8 000–5 000 yr BP). To cite this article: É. Chaumillon et al., C. The synsedimentary tectonic activity evidenced in central and northern Tunisia points out the fact that the Campanian–Maastrichtian deposits are associated with several NW–SE and east–west normal faults. These results suggest that the east–west transform fault of North African Margin is still active during this stage. These data allow us to discuss a new geodynamic model for the North African Margin. A gravimetric survey has been carried out in a sedimentary basin, south of Madagascar, in order to define the bedrock morphology. The bedrock is made up of crystalline and volcanic rocks. The objective of the survey was to demonstrate whether a relationship could be established between bedrock morphology and groundwater mineralisation. Indeed, bedrock morphology has been successfully mapped and it is confirmed that most of the low mineralisation wells are located in areas where the slope of the bedrock is trending to the south-west, which ensures a higher hydraulic conductivity, i.e. a faster water flow, than in the other parts of the survey area. High-frequency stratigraphic cycles (10 s to 100 s ka) often show, at a specific location, an alternation of ‘dynamic’ (proximal-energetic), and ‘non-dynamic’ (distal-pelagic) processes with time. When sedimentation is syn-deformation, these processes tend respectively to fill-up tectonically-induced topography or to drape it. As a consequence, growth strata are alternatively thickened and isopach across the growth structure. High-resolution kinematic studies of growth structures (folds and faults), which assume that sedimentation always fills up topographies (‘fill-to-the-top’ model), may therefore mistake sedimentary cyclicity for tectonic cyclicity. Resume. Dans la partie centrale de l’Aquitaine, les dép?ts marins du Miocène moyen correspondent à des sables et des grès calcaires, témoins d’environnements très littoraux et regroupés sous le terme de Formation des Sables Fauves. L’étude des Sables Fauves révèle deux unités de dép?t aux lithofaciès proches. Le Membre de Peyrecrechen (Langhien), daté par Praeorbulina glomerosa, représente une séquence de dép?t de troisième ordre (cycle Bur5/Lan1). Le Membre de Matilon (Serravallien), daté par le groupe Orbulina, illustre le cycle suivant (Lan2/Ser1). Les conditions climatiques sont de type subtropical, ayant connu une dégradation par rapport au Miocène inférieur. Une activité orogénique se manifeste durant le Miocène moyen; la déformation est reliée à la reprise de l’halocinèse dans le sud de l’Aquitaine. La propagation des contraintes entra?ne la réactivation de grandes structures anticlinales ainsi que la mise en place de d?mes sédimentaires formés par les mouvements halocinétiques. Durant le Langhien, la mer occupe l’ensemble du domaine centre-aquitain; au Serravallien, le domaine marin est restreint aux secteurs les plus occidentaux de la région. Du sud vers le nord, l’unité serravallienne s’embo?te progressivement dans l’unité langhienne et dans le substratum. La chute du niveau marin relatif au passage Langhien / Serravallien entra?ne une importante érosion (limite de séquence de type 1 sensu Vail), puis sa remontée commande l’encaissement du Membre de Matilon dans la partie septentrionale. L’utilisation des Sables Fauves comme marqueur du Miocène moyen permet de révéler plusieurs phases de déformation durant le Néogène et d’identifier les structures tectoniques impliquées. Formation and evolution of estuarine sand ridges are some of the less well known among the different classes of sand banks. Simulation of tides and related sand bedload transport on historical bathymetries brings new insights about the secular evolution of two estuarine sand ridges (the Saint-Georges and the ‘Longe de Boyard’ sand banks, Atlantic coast of France). Two different mechanisms are involved in order to explain the evolutions of these banks, suggesting the category of estuarine sand banks to be less homogenous than it is proposed in the last classifications of sand banks. Geochemical studies of geological samples require the precise determination of their major and trace element contents and, when measured, of their isotopic compositions. It is now commonly accepted that the accuracy and precision of geochemical analyses are best estimated by the concomitant analysis of international reference materials run as unknown samples. Although the composition of a wide selection of basalts is relatively well constrained, this is far from being the case for sedimentary materials. We present here a comprehensive set of major and trace element data as well as Nd, Hf, Sr and Pb isotopic compositions for thirteen commonly used international reference materials – eight magmatic rocks (BHVO‐2, BR, BE‐N, BR 24, AGV‐1, BIR‐1, UB‐N, RGM‐1) and five sediments (JLk‐1, JSd‐1, JSd‐2, JSd‐3, LKSD‐1). We determined the concentrations of over forty elements in the magmatic rocks together with Sr, Nd, Hf and Pb isotopic compositions. Our trace element results were both accurate (difference ≤ 3%) and precise (reproducibility at 1s ≤ 3%) and the isotopic results were very similar to other published values. In contrast, we observed a significant chemical and isotopic variability in the sedimentary materials, which we attribute to mineral heterogeneities in the powders. Despite the limitation imposed by this heterogeneity, our work presents a complete set of data determined with a precision not yet achieved in the literature for sedimentary material. We also provide the first Nd, Hf and Pb isotopic measurements for the five sediments, which are commonly used by the geochemical community. Our study of both basalt and sediment reference materials represents a comprehensive and self‐consistent set of geochemical data and can therefore be considered as a reference database for the community.  相似文献
