Upper Cretaceous platform carbonates of the Vocontian Basin (southeastern France) have been investigated in a cross-section from the proximal deposits exposed in the lower Rhône Valley to the distal part of the basin in the Southern Subalpine Ranges north of Nice. The stratigraphic interval studied in detail spans the uppermost Turonian and Coniacian.Palynofacies patterns were used to detect eustatic signals at a third-order scale and are the tool for correlation of proximal and distal platform deposits. The organic constituents observed in the studied samples have been grouped into a continental fraction, including higher plant debris (phytoclasts) and sporomorphs, and a marine fraction with dinoflagellate cysts, acritarchs, prasinophytes, and foraminiferal test linings. The main factors influencing the stratigraphic and spatial distribution of land-derived, allochthonous, and marine, relatively autochthonous, organic particles are the proximity of land, the organic productivity, the degree of biodegradation and the hydrodynamic conditions of the depositional system. Palynofacies parameters used for the sequence stratigraphic interpretation are: (1) the ratio of continental to marine constituents (CONT/MAR ratio); (2) the ratio of opaque to translucent phytoclasts (OP/TR ratio); (3) the phytoclast particle size and shape; and (4) the relative proportion and species diversity of marine plankton. Ternary diagrams illustrating significant proximality changes were used to decipher transgressive-regressive trends within the succession.High amounts of translucent phytoclasts and decreasing values of the CONT/MAR ratio occur during the phase of relative sea-level rise in the upper Turonian. The stratigraphic interval of maximum flooding around the Turonian/Coniacian boundary is marked by the highest abundance and species diversity of dinoflagellate cysts, and by high percentages of opaque, equidimensional particles within the phytoclast group. The OP/TR ratio is still high within the lower Coniacian representing the early highstand deposits, whereas the relative abundance of marine constituents is again decreasing. Sedimentary organic matter of the upper Coniacian is dominated by large, blade-shaped, mainly opaque phytoclasts, which are a characteristic palynofacies signature of late highstand deposits. The present study demonstrates the high potential of palynofacies analysis in high-resolution stratigraphy and correlation of sedimentary series of shallow epeiric seas.  相似文献

The Kazhdumi Formation of the Bangestan Group is a well-known source rock that has produced abundant oil in most petroleum fields in the Zagros Basin, which stretches from northwest to southwest Iran over hundreds of kilometres. The formation reaches a thickness of 230 m at the type section in northwest Zagros but thins out to 40–50 m in wells studied from the South Pars giant petroleum field, where it comprises mainly grey shales with occasional intercalations of marls and sandstones. South Pars, best known as the Iranian part of the world's largest non-associated gas field, contains small quantities of oil above and below the Kazhdumi Formation.  相似文献

Palynological and biomarker characteristics of organic facies recovered from Cretaceous–Miocene well samples in the Ras El Bahar Oilfield, southwest Gulf of Suez, and their correlation with lithologies, environments of deposition and thermal maturity have provided a sound basis for determining their source potential for hydrocarbons. In addition to palynofacies analysis, TOC/Rock-Eval pyrolysis, kerogen concentrates, bitumen extraction, carbon isotopes and saturated and aromatic biomarkers enable qualitative and quantitative assessments of sedimentary organic matter to be made. The results obtained from Rock-Eval pyrolysis and molecular biomarker data indicate that most of the samples come from horizons that have fair to good hydrocarbon generation potential in the study area. The Upper Cretaceous–Paleocene-Lower Eocene samples contain mostly Type-II to Type-III organic matter with the capability of generating oil and gas. The sediments concerned accumulated in dysoxic–anoxic marine environments. By contrast, the Miocene rocks yielded mainly Type-III and Type-II/III organic matter with mainly gas-generating potential. These rocks reflect deposition in a marine environment into which there was significant terrigenous input. Three palynofacies types have been recognized. The first (A) consists of Type-III gas-prone kerogen and is typical of the Early–Middle Miocene Belayim, Kareem and upper Rudeis formations. The second (B) has mixed oil and gas features and characterizes the remainder of the Rudeis Formation. The third association (C) is dominated by amorphous organic matter, classified as borderline Type-II oil-prone kerogen, and is typical of the Matulla (Turonian–Santonian) and Wata (Turonian) formations. Rock-Eval Tmax, PI, hopane and sterane biomarkers consistently indicate an immature to early mature stage of thermal maturity for the whole of the studied succession.  相似文献

Palynofacies and palynological data from Eocene sediments documents a comprehensive picture of the nature (degraded, structured, non-structured, amorphous etc.) of organic matter, their distribution, and depositional setting for Matasukh lignite mines of Nagaur Basin in western India. Four Sporomorph Eco Groups (SEG) are defined based on the palynological data viz., Upland SEG, Lowland SEG, Coastal SEG and Tidally influenced SEG. Principal component analysis was used to categorize the organic matter into two palynofacies. Palynofacies-A is dominated by brown Phytoclasts (in particular cuticles) and Palynofacies-B is dominated by amorphous organic matter, mainly derived from terrestrially degraded material. In Palynofacies-B there is a reduced frequency of cuticles and high frequency of non-biostructured amorphous phytoclasts in comparison to Palynofacies-A. Further the Integration of Tidal limit index and Phytoclast preservation index suggest that the sediments were deposited in a proximal setting and were regularly influenced by brackish-marine water. The sand bed with current bedding in which the troughs are draped with lignitic clay indicate the tidal wave action. Tyson's ternary diagram indicates the deposition of these sediments in a sub-oxic to dysoxic condition, rich in Kerogen Type-II/III. Thermal alteration index (TAI) shows that the sediments of Matasukh lignite mine have attained maturation (the characteristic value reached by hydrocarbon generating sediments) to generate dry gas as majority of the organic matter is of Type-III Kerogen with few samples yielding Type-II. These sediments were deposited in deltaic plain, in particular, fluvial dominated marginal marine environment.  相似文献

The Middle to Upper Triassic series in the Norwegian Barents Sea represents an important target for hydrocarbon exploration. However, the dating and correlation of these rocks are problematic due to the scarcity of age-diagnostic macrofossils, lateral facies variation and the overall thickness of the succession. Palynology has proven to be a useful dating tool but further work is necessary to improve the zonal resolution, particularly for the Upper Triassic Series. The current paper presents a detailed palynostratigraphy of the Middle – Upper Triassic succession in four exploration wells (7120/12-2, 7228/2-1s, 7-1a and 9-1s) drilled in the Hammerfest and Nordkapp basins. Eleven informal palynological zones are described from the stratigraphic interval spanning the Kobbe, Snadd and Fruholmen formations, which constitute regionally significant hydrocarbon source and reservoir rock facies. The results of this study contribute to a higher resolution palynostratigraphy for the Middle to Upper Triassic strata of the southern Barents Sea (SBS), and an improved correlation with the stratigraphy of the Svalbard Archipelago. Palynofacies data for the succession, presented here for the first time, indicates depositional environments ranging from fluvio-deltaic to offshore marine.  相似文献

In different areas of the Western Desert of Egypt, the Abu Roash “G” Member exhibits either a reservoir or source affinity. Thus, thirteen cutting samples covering the Abu Roash “G” Member were selected from the Nest-1A well at Matruh Basin to investigate its hydrocarbon source potential. Palynological age dating of the section that is calibrated with foraminifera and ostracodes enabled a proper identification of the “G” Member. Detailed analysis of the vertical distribution of particulate organic matter of this member shows two palynofacies types. PF-1 reflects an outer middle shelf depositional environment of prevailed reducing (suboxic-anoxic) conditions for the organic-rich shales of the lower “G” Member (samples 1–8). While, PF-2 reflects a minor regression that resulted in deposition of another organic-rich shales of the upper “G” Member (samples 9–13) in an inner middle shelf setting under the same prevailing reducing (suboxic-anoxic) conditions.Organic geochemical analysis reveals good to very good potential of the “G” Member as a hydrocarbon source rock (1.8–2.41, avg. 2.15 total organic content wt %). It also shows good to very good petroleum potential (PP: 4.8–11 , avg. 8 mg HC/g rock). Pyrolsis and palynofacies analyses show kerogen type II for the lower “G” Member (samples 1–8), which is characterized by high Hydrogen index (HI: 396 and 329 mg HC/g TOC at depths 1500 and 1560 m) and very high dominance of oil-prone material (amorphous organic matter “AOM”, marine palynomorphs, and sporomorphs) and very rare occurrence of gas-prone material (brown phytoclasts). The upper “G” Member (samples 9–13) shows kerogen type II-III, which is characterized by a lower HI value of 213 mg HC/g TOC at depth 1340 m and it contains fewer amounts of gas-prone material and relatively lower AOM and marine palynomorphs in comparison to the upper “G” Member. Maturation parameters Tmax (430–433 °C), production index (PI: 0.1 mg HC/g rock), and thermal alteration index (TAI: 2+) indicate the lower “G” Member has already entered the early oil-window kitchen, and it is expected to produce oil. The upper “G” Member is expected to produce only oil with no gas shows, because it is marginally mature (Tmax 426 °C, PI 0.2, TAI 2). The source potential index (SPI: 5.3 t HC/m2) of the “G” Member shows it as currently generating moderate quantities of oil in the area of Nest-1A well.Consequently, the organic-rich shales of the “G” Member are suggested here as a promising, active oil source rock in that extreme northwestern part of the Western Desert of Egypt. However, for commercial oil recovery from the Abu Roash “G” Member, it is highly recommended to explore the depocentre of Matruh Basin at about 150 km east the Nest-1A well.  相似文献

Twenty-eight samples from the Bahariya Formation of the Salam-17 Well in the north Western Desert were palynologically investigated. These samples are of Cenomanian age. Fair diversity and fair to moderately preserved palynomorph assemblage has been recovered. Among them, the dinoflagellate cysts showed very poor diversity and abundance. Four miospore zones have been informally identified in the lower Cenomanian. Various palynofacies criteria, adopted from previous publications (e.g. relative particle abundance data, brown to black wood ratio, equi-dimensional to lath-shaped black wood ratio, average size of phytoclasts and spores/pollen ratio) are applied as alternative indicators to monitor the proximal–distal trends instead of the marine palynomorphs-based parameters. The method can be applied in the Egyptian Western Desert to overcome the rarity and absence of dinoflagellate cysts in the recovered organic residues. The palynofacies study of the section demonstrates a predominantly regressive phase, characterized by deltaic, distributary or tidal channels, interrupted by short-lived marine incursions. The palynofacies trends within the studied succession indicate six genetic sequences informally described as Genetic Stratigraphic Sequences A through F.  相似文献

The sedimentary sequence containing lignite deposits in Gurha quarry of the Bikaner-Nagaur Basin(Rajasthan)has been investigated. The samples from lignite and allied shale horizons were evaluated for petrographical, palynological, palynofacies and organic geochemical inferences,to depict the source flora and to reconstruct the palaeodepositional conditions prevailed during the sedimentation. An assessment for the hydrocarbon generation potential of these deposits has also been made. The results revealed the dominance of huminite macerals and phytoclasts organic matter(OM) indicating the existence of forested vegetation in the vicinity of the depositional site.A relatively high terrigenous/aquatic ratio(TAR) and the carbon preference index(CPI) are also suggesting the contribution of higher plants in the peat formation. However, the n-alkane distributions, maximizing at n-C17 and n-C29,showed inputs from the algal communities along with the higher plant derived organic matters.Recovered palynomorphs of the families Onagraceae,Meliaceae,Arecaceae,Rhizophoraceae,Rubiaceae,Ctenolophonaceae, etc.together with oleanene and ursane types of triterpenoids suggest the contribution from angiosperms source vegetation.Interestingly, the presence of Araucareaceae and Podocarpaceae pollen grains shows the existence of gymnosperms vegetation.Further, the presence of tetracyclic diterpanes;demethylated entbeyerane, sandaracopimarane, pimarane, and Kaurane type of compounds confirms the contribution of conifers. The variation in the values of the coefficient of non-equality(H:0.68%-7.56%),the standard deviation(8:0.04%-0.16%) and the coefficient of variability(V:16.10%-46.47%),also shows the heterogeneity in the source organic matter. The various petrographical indices, palynological entities, and geochemical parameters indicate that the peatforming vegetation was accumulated under a mixed environment and fluctuating hydrological settings. The interpretation of palynofacies data on APP(Amorphous organic matter-Phytoclast-Palynomorphs) diagram suggests that the accumulation of organic matter occurred in a dysoxic-suboxic condition in a proximal(to land)setting with the shift to an anoxic condition in distal setting towards the termination of sedimentation. The huminite(ulminite) reflectance(R_r) values(av.0.28%) showed a good relationship with average T_(max) value(414℃),suggesting the immaturity. The TOC content ranges of 13-59 wt.%,and HI values vary between 101 and 546 mg HC/g TOC in the studied samples.Collectively, the studied lignite and shale samples have the admixed kerogens(Type Ⅲ-Ⅱ) and exhibit the ability to generate the gaseous to oil hydrocarbons upon maturation.  相似文献

This paper presents the integrated results of palynofacies and geochemical analyses in Turonian carbonate strata from the Sergipe Basin, Brazil. Forty-three outcrop samples were analyzed from sections of the Cotinguiba Formation in the Votorantim and Rita Cacete quarries. Our results allow for the characterization of the organic matter and interpretation of the environments of deposition. Together with the existing geochemical data, the results allow for recognition of oxic and dysoxic intervals and inferences pertaining to local oceanographic conditions to explain these environmental changes. The palynofacies groups are dominated by marine palynomorphs and amorphous organic matter (AOM), with minor amounts of terrigenous palynomorphs and phytoclasts. The total organic carbon (TOC) and δ13C ratio are directly correlated with the dominant palynofacies elements, particularly AOM. The upper section in Rita Cacete quarry has the most complete data set, and the TOC, δ13C and marine-derived AOM in this section tend to decrease upsection and serve to differentiate the oxic and dysoxic intervals. The sections also contain abundant, low-diversity dinoflagellate assemblages composed primarily of Trichodinium boltenhagenii, Cribroperidinium? muderongense, Canningia reticulata and Xenascus plotei. The palynofacies and dinoflagellate assemblages indicate deposition in shallow marine to outer neritic environments. The dysoxic events are recognized by an increase in TOC and δ13C, high amounts of AOM, an abundance of the low-diversity dinoflagellate assemblages and the lowest amounts of terrestrial components. The changes in marine productivity seem to be related to periods of low-intensity upwelling, which likely decreased the levels of dissolved oxygen in the basin.  相似文献

Uppermost Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous strata of the Silesian Nappe of the Outer Western Carpathians contain large amounts of shale, which can, under favourable conditions, become source rocks for hydrocarbons. This study analysed 45 samples from the area of Czech Republic by the means of palynofacies analysis, thermal alteration index (TAI) of palynomorphs and total organic carbon (TOC) content to determine the kerogen type, hydrocarbon source rock potential, and to interpret the depositional environment. Uppermost Jurassic Vendryně Formation and Lower Cretaceous Formations (Těšín Limestone, Hradiště and Lhoty) reveal variable amount of mostly gas prone type III kerogen. Aptian Veřovice Formation has higher organic matter content (over 3 wt.%) and oil-prone type II kerogen. Organic matter is mature to overmature and hydrocarbon potential predisposes it as a source of gas. Aptian black claystones of the Veřovice Fm. are correlatable with oceanic anoxic event 1 (OAE1).  相似文献
