This paper examines community development projects in Moerewa, a small town in Te Tai Tokerau (central Northland) decimated by industrial decline in the late 1980s. It builds on a series of conversations with Ngahau Davis of He Iwi Kotahi Tatou Trust, which has sought to revitalise Moerewa by challenging conventional understandings of development. The paper is part of an on-going engagement with the Trust, which includes involving it with a second year undergraduate field course. In the paper, we argue for the political and theoretical potential of post-development inquiry and practice in communities like Moerewa.  相似文献

This paper describes how hopes can be, and have been, placed in nanotechnology. Focusing on two recent UK government reports into the future of nanotechnology, by the DTI/OST and MoD, the paper describes how the disclosure of the nanoscale as a place subject to intervention, the act that is taken to define nanotechnology, can be understood in the context of anticipatory knowledge practices that create futures. Because the object of such practices are virtualities, such as opportunities and threats, the paper argues that affect is transversal to both nano-technoscience and anticipatory governance. In conclusion, I open up a set of questions about anticipatory knowledges and argue that the ground that enables hope to be placed in nanotechnology is the event that defines nano – to simultaneously reduce 'life' to matter and to multiply 'life' into a limitless set of materialities.  相似文献

C.P. Pow became a significant part of my own academic journey from soon after I joined the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1999. Our academic inspirations, interests and identities overlapped, and we had opportunities to co-teach and co-write. I use these overlaps and collaborations as a way into reflecting on Pow's work, mainly during the period up to when he received tenure at NUS in 2011. I focus on two substantive themes. The first has to do with how and why Pow approached the landscape of Singapore beyond the visual or the ‘seen’. The second theme concerns the origins, development and consolidation of Pow's contributions to examining urban Asia in ways that unsettle Anglo-American-derived generalizations.  相似文献
