What constitutes economic development in a globalised world has significantly changed in the last twenty years. The literature indicates that economic development lacks a dedicated coherent body of theory. The evidence to date suggests that a positivistic predictive theory may not be possible for economic development; however a constructionist explanatory meta-theory of economic development might be developed by employing poststructuralist methodologies. This paper suggests that one way forward in this impasse of theory and unquestioned orthodoxy might be with works of Gilles Deleuze. Deleuzian metaphorical concepts are inherently spatial and resonate well with economic development practitioners because both are concerned with physical events such as the location of a new branch manufacturing plant, a warehouse or a shopping centre. In this paper, I agrue that conventional or positivistic social science research approaches can only develop, at best, limited relevant theory for economic development. Such a general theory is not ‘particularly’ relevant because positive (or negative) economic growth often occurs regardless of the best efforts of the local practitioners. Deleuzian philosophical concepts provide metaphorical tools that may be useful for visualising spatial economic activities. These tools encourage a practitioner to develop innovative solutions to resolve local economic problems. Rhizomatic thinking has the potential to help a practitioner become more effective.  相似文献

Marcus A. Doel  Jeremy Segrott   《Geoforum》2004,35(6):727-738
The paper explores the materiality of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), with particular reference to aromatherapy, Chinese herbal medicine, and chiropractic, as presented in the journals of UK-based practitioner associations. The paper begins by arguing for a poststructuralist approach to materiality. It then considers how certain materials play a signature (or emblematic) role in the definition and practice of various CAM modalities. Focusing primarily on the examples of essential oils and herbal remedies, we consider how such materials are valued for their agency and expressiveness within the therapeutic encounter. However, these signature materials also possess the ability to produce unwanted effects which regulators, practitioners, and manufacturers seek to control. Consequently, the materialization of CAM is fraught with tension. In addition to these signature materials, the paper also considers the wider assemblage of materials (especially treatment couches) that supplement the taking place of CAM. Although these supplementary materials are often treated in a functional, instrumental, and taken-for-granted manner, these materials are also shown to be duplicitous. The paper concludes by arguing that the continuing professionalization and regulation of the UK CAM sector is radically changing the situated consistency of its signature and supplementary materials.  相似文献

Participatory action research in a poststructuralist vein   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper introduces a participatory action research process that has been shaped by poststructuralist thought. We report on the stages and outcomes of a project conducted in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, a resource region that has experienced downsizing and privatising of its major employer, the state-owned power industry. Through a participatory action research process involving community members, local Council and academic researchers the singular economic identity of the region was challenged and a more enabling representation developed. Drawing on a discourse of the diverse economy and the asset-based approach to community development the project shed light on the wide range of economic activities residents were already engaged in and the multitude of abilities and ideas they possessed. This exercise produced a new representation of the economy of the Latrobe Valley that helped to shift the vision of what was possible in the region. In the final stage of the project this alternative vision was acted on as groups turned shared ideas into projects and those who were most used to being defined as economically dependent and victims of economic circumstances increasingly came to identify as active and contributing economic subjects in the diverse economy. The paper considers the role of subjectivity, representation and micropolitics in participatory action research and concludes with a reflection on the project’s strengths and weaknesses.  相似文献

This paper reviews the experience of discovering, abandoning, and rediscovering elements of the work of political ecologist Piers Blaikie from the period spanning 1992-2006. In the process, we analyze the cyclic fate of critical ideas in the field of political ecology, including especially the “chain of explanation,” during a tumultuous period where materialist and constructivist theorists encountered one another. The paper concludes with a specific discussion of the power of traditional tools in political ecology for addressing current socio-ecological crises, specifically HIV/AIDS in southern Africa.  相似文献

This paper concentrates on the practices and possibilities of doing poststructural cultural geographies of nature. The paper begins with an overview of the ways in which nature is being reconceptualised in social thought. It charts a middle territory between strong social constructivism and realist approaches, arguing for a relational understanding of nature and culture, and the extension of agency to non-humans--organic and artificial. These 'more than human worlds' (<citeref rid="b51">Whatmore, 'Hybrid geographies'</citeref>, Sage, London, 2002) pose considerable challenges for researchers. They open spaces for new subjects and new subjectivities, decentre human agency, and challenge more conventional methodological approaches that rely on a separation between subject and object. The paper considers the sorts of methodological shifts required for relational analysis, arguing for a multilayered, multivalent, embodied and situated approach. The practices of situatedness are emphasised in the Australian context, especially in relation to cross-cultural and postcolonial understandings. The paper concludes with a brief comment on the politics of doing such cultural geographies.  相似文献
