ABSTRACT. Recent attempts by U.S. politicians to reform the nation'sschools have shifted the goal of education to school accountability as assessed in standardized testing. Such an emphasis undermines geographical education in schools because of geography'ssuperficial representation in tests and in the social studies curriculum. Fieldwork done in the classroom can point to means of circumventing this dilemma. Collaborative fieldwork between college faculty members and public‐school teachers has the potential for adding geography to the social studies curriculum in a substantive way. Work conducted jointly by Hartwick College and the Oneonta (New York) Middle School exemplifies such a partnership.  相似文献

近年来,《古地理学报》(中文版及英文版)连续收到一些来稿,其作者根据迈尔(Miall,1985)文章的观点和方法,把他们研究地区碎屑岩剖面中的每个岩层中的岩石挑出来,归纳出一些岩石类型,如砾岩、砂岩、细粒岩等,并称它们为岩相(lithofacies)。这不符合沉积相的定义。我曾写过几篇文章,即冯增昭(2018,2020)及Feng(2019),指出这些问题,希望国内外的作者、尤其是国内的作者,不再继续盲目地引用和传播迈尔(1985)文章的观点和方法。迈尔是第1个称岩石(实际上是沉积物)为岩相的人,他的观点和他提出的相分析方法误导了沉积相的正确定义及正常的相分析方法。本文主要讨论迈尔(Miall,1985)文章中的问题,即他把沉积物当作岩相并用岩相分析相。不讨论他文章的贡献及建筑单元中的一些术语欠严谨的问题。在这里,必须申明,本文中的相,是沉积岩石学中的相,不是火成岩岩石学、变质岩岩石学、古生物学、地层学、地球物理学、地球化学等地质学分支学科中的相。岩相、相和沉积相是同义的术语。当然,这些术语的定义是有争议的,希望遵循“百花齐放和百家争鸣” 的方针和地质实践,逐步地解决这些争议。  相似文献

李旭旦先生在一生中译著无数,其中为学界所重者莫过于《人地学原理》、《海陆的起源》、《地理学思想史》、《国外地理科学文献选译》。改革开放以来,李先生花了大量宝贵的时间从事学术翻译,其实大有深意。他将翻译作为其复兴全面的人文地理学大业的一部分,是走向世界的基础性工作,也是高水平研究的基础之一,他对学术翻译的重视还隐含了其对学术讨论和对话的重视。目前,我们对世界人文地理学发展仍比较隔膜,为了避免20 世纪50 年代学习苏联时犯下的错误,必须大力迻译国际上的重要研究成果,全面了解国际上的学术状况,形成我们自己的判断,然后确定我们的研究论题和研究方法,从事原创性的研究,编写出世界水准的教科书和著作,走向世界。需要提升学术翻译在学术评价中的地位,这也是李先生翻译工作给我们的启示之一。  相似文献

This article summarizes findings from a research project on junior farmer field and life schools (JFFLS) as an agriculture‐based intervention to improve the livelihood prospects of children and orphans made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS in central Mozambique. In the sites investigated JFFLS have opened up concrete present and potential livelihood options in agriculture and beyond. More generally, the resource profile dynamics of participants are altered in ways that provide strong grounds to believe that the skills and knowledge they have gained will positively impact the trajectories of their future lives. In terms of HIV/AIDS mitigation, the findings recommend livelihood‐based interventions aimed at altering the vulnerability context of specific population groups.  相似文献

Recent scholarship on gentrification suggests the need to pay attention the role of the state in fostering new geographies of gentrification. This paper highlights the different agents and enablers of gentrification and the increasing importance of place-based community activism in inner city neighborhoods that is a response to a retrenching state. These agents include new types of gentrifiers: family-oriented, middle-class groups who have different interests and motivations from "traditional" (childless) gentrifiers. The neoliberalization of social service provision has enabled private groups, such as middle-class gentrifiers, to transform critical social institutions in gentrifying neighborhoods. One such institution is a charter school, which enables private management of public dollars to provide public education. Through interviews and archival analysis, these new dynamics in the gentrification process are explored by examining the importance of place-based community that is produced and consumed by gentrifiers in an intown neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia.  相似文献

Abstract

Isolines have proved to be a highly effective way of conveying the shape of a surface (most commonly in the form of height contours to convey geographical landscape). Selecting the right contour interval is a compromise between showing sufficient detail in flat regions, whilst avoiding excessive crowding of lines in steep and morphologically complex areas. The traditional way of avoiding coalescence and confusion across steep regions has been to manually remove short sections of intermediate contours, while retaining index contours. Incorporating humans in automated environments is not viable. This research reports on the design, implementation and evaluation of an automated solution to this problem involving the automatic identification of coalescing lines, and removal of line segments to ensure clarity in the interpretation of contour information. Evaluation was made by subjective comparison with Ordnance Survey products. The results were found to be very close to the quality associated with manual techniques.  相似文献

Geography seems to be in good hands in New Zealand's schools and universities, but we cannot afford to be complacent. What are the key priorities for further strengthening geography in New Zealand in the years ahead? The New Zealand Geographical Society has to play a crucial role by helping to bring together geographers in the different sectors, as well as in promoting New Zealand geography internationally, and raising its profile in the media. Most of all, we need to demonstrate the vibrancy, significance and relevance of geography to the wider community.  相似文献
