The Kimmeridge Clay is considered a major oil source rock for the North Sea hydrocarbon province. The formation is also developed onshore in an organic-rich mudstone facies. This paper examines the possibility of onshore oil generation from the Kimmeridge Clay. Geochemically, onshore basin margin sediments contain rich, potential source horizons with mainly Type l/Type ll oil-prone kerogen, but are immature. Some deeper Cleveland Basin sediments have reached marginal maturity. Burial history reconstruction suggests significant formation palaeoburial depths in central areas of the Cleveland and Wessex Basins. Computed vitrinite isoreflectance contours show the Wealden and Isle of Wight Kimmeridge Clay to be thermally mature. Basin modelling suggests an early Palaeogene onset of oil generation in parts of the Cleveland Basin, while maximum oil generation could have been reached by the formation base in the Isle of Wight area during the late Cretaceous. Although basin subsidence ceased in the Neogene, in the Weald and Isle of Wight, where the formation is still deeply buried, oil generation probably continued for some time during uplift. Thus significant quantities of oil could have been generated. Whether or not this oil is present today however, would depend on the correct timing of suitable migration and trap structures.  相似文献

Recent high-resolution airborne gravity data taken over the South Yellow Sea and its western onshore–offshore transition zone, combined with ground gravity data taken over the onshore area (Subei Basin), China, show that the South Basin of the South Yellow Sea and the Subei Basin correspond to the same gravity low anomaly. Magnetic data also support our interpretations. Both areas have similar strata, structures and hydrocarbon potential, and form a large Cenozoic terrestrial sedimentary basin controlled by the Tanlu Fault. Cenozoic terrestrial strata are well developed in the South Basin of the South Yellow Sea, and thick Meso–Paleozoic marine strata are preserved in the Central uplift area. Future hydrocarbon exploration in the South Yellow Sea should focus on the Cenozoic continental sequence, especially the Paleogene in the South Basin, as well as the Meso–Paleozoic marine rocks in the Central uplift area. The western part of the middle depression and middle and western parts of the north depression in the South Basin of the South Yellow Sea have the greatest potential for hydrocarbon accumulation.  相似文献

The earliest attempts to find oil in Britain, dating from 1918–1922, based on anticlines flanking the Pennines, were largely unsuccessful. Renewal of exploration in the 1930s, aimed at a broader range of prospects, met with much criticism but went ahead after nationalization of the unknown and undiscovered oil resources (1934). The south of England ranked as first priority but the initial drilling of the new campaign carried out in 1935–1937 yielded only minor quantities of oil and gas. Attention was transferred in 1938 to Upper Palaeozoic prospects in the Midlands and north, resulting in small gas and oil discoveries in Scotland and Yorkshire, and discovery of a series of commerical oilfields in the Upper Carboniferous of Nottinghamshire. In the 1950s the first commercial discovery in the Jurassic was made at Kimmeridge in Dorset. Further Carboniferous discoveries were made in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, and a series of fresh objectives defined by seismic reflection were drilled in the Mesozoic basin of southern England. This phase of exploration was terminated at the end of 1964 by adverse fiscal changes. Continuation of effective exploration operations remained uneconomic until the oil price rise in 1973.  相似文献

Onshore tsunami deposits resulting from the 1993 Southwest Hokkaido and 1983 Japan Sea earthquakes were described to evaluate the feasibility of tsunami deposits for inferring paleoseismic events along submarine faults. Tsunami deposits were divided into three types, based on their composition and aerial distribution: (A) deposits consisting only of floating materials, (B) locally distributed siliclastic deposits, and (C) widespread siliclastic deposits. The most widely distributed tsunami deposits consist of the first two types. Type C deposits are mostly limited to areas where the higher tsunami runup was observed. The scale of tsunami represented by vertical tsunami runup is an important factor controlling the volume of tsunami deposits. The thickest deposits, about 10 cm, occur behind coastal dunes. To produce thick siliclastic tsunami deposits, a suitable source area, such as sand bar or dune, must be available in addition to sufficient vertical tsunami runup. Estimation of the amounts of erosion and deposition indicates that tsunami deposits were derived from both onshore and shoreface regions. The composition and grain size of the tsunami deposits strongly reflect the nature of the sedimentary materials of their source area. Sedimentary structures of the tsunami deposits suggest both low and high flow régimes. Consequently, it seems very difficult to identify tsunami deposits based only on grain size distribution or sedimentary structure of a single site in ancient successions.  相似文献

华南陆缘出露的上三叠统-白垩系,累计厚度超过10 000m,露头调查未见油苗,烃源岩主要为泥岩、碳质泥岩和煤线,有机质类型以Ⅱ-Ⅲ型为主。上三叠统小水组,发育较深水的海相、Ⅱ型良好烃源岩,TOC为1.17%~5.43%;下侏罗统桥源组发育海陆过渡环境的Ⅲ型良好烃源岩,TOC为1.36%~10.37%;下侏罗统其他层系(金鸡组、银瓶山组、上龙水组、长埔组、吉水门组)发育浅海-半深海相的中等-好的烃源岩,TOC为0.5%~1.76%。烃源岩均已处于成熟-过成熟阶段。小水组、蓝塘群烃源岩品质良好,厚度巨大,在南海北部海域开展中生界烃源岩研究时,值得重点关注是否有与之相当的烃源岩层系发育。  相似文献

An evaluation of the petroleum generating potential of onshore Eocene-Miocene sequences of Western Sabah, Malaysia was performed based on organic petrological and geochemical methods. The sequences analysed are the Belait, Meligan, Temburong and West Crocker formations of western Sabah. The Belait Formation which is Stage IV equivalent in the offshore represents one of the major source rock/reservoirs of the petroleum-bearing Sabah Basin. The Eocene-Early Miocene West Crocker and Temburong formations are deepwater turbidites whilst the Miocene Meligan and Belait formations are shallow marine fluvio-deltaic deposits. The vitrinite reflectance and pyrolysis Tmax values show that the Belait samples are generally immature for hydrocarbon generation, whereas the Meligan, Temburong and West Crocker samples are in the mature to late maturity stage of hydrocarbon generation. The overall bulk source rock properties of the Belait and Meligan show fair to good petroleum source rock potential with TOC more than 1 wt %, hydrocarbon yield in the range of 400–1300 ppm and moderately high HI for many of the samples. Most of the samples representing the Temburong and West Crocker formations have TOC less than 1 wt% and have no to fair hydrocarbon generating potential. Interestingly, the samples collected in the West Crocker Formation characterized by slump deposits (MTD) have TOC>2 and possess good to excellent hydrocarbon generating potential. The organic matter present in all of the studied formations is mainly of terrigenous origin based on the abundance of woody plant materials observed under the microscope. Consequently, the analysed sequences are predominantly gas prone, dominated by Type III and Type III-IV kerogen except for minor occurrence of mixed oil-gas prone Type II-III kerogen in the Belait Formation and in the slump mass transport deposits (MTD) of the West Crocker Formation.  相似文献

This study assesses the effects of a high rise building on the beach and dune at an intensively developed shoreline through field investigation of geomorphological and sedimentological characteristics and wind tunnel investigation of wind speed and direction. Results indicate that wind speed is increased close to the building, where wind is often deflected to a more onshore direction. Obliquely offshore northwesterly winds are the most dramatically altered and cause onshore flows (with pronounced upward flows) in the landward portion of the beach near the building. Onshore deflections in wind direction cause besanding of the boardwalk and create highly localized scour and deposition zones. A dune on the backbeach breaks up zones of sediment transport and scour and diminishes the likelihood that scour areas will cause increased hazard to landward buildings as a result of flooding. Generic large-scale studies are required to develop criteria for communities to use to specify optimum dimensions, locations and shapes of landforms that are modified or created by high rise structures.  相似文献
