We have calculated vertical velocities and their change in time from three precise levellings in Finland, with central epochs
1902, 1946, and 1986. Models with and without simultaneous determination of heights give the same results for velocities.
Evidence for velocity change in time appears at first sight strong but on closer examination turns out to be inconclusive.
We offer an alternative explanation in terms of levelling errors and estimate them. A new uplift map closely reproduces main
features of earlier maps from partial data, but does not support some details in them.

The proper identification and removal of outliers in the combination of rates of vertical displacements derived from GPS,
tide gauges/satellite altimetry, and GRACE observations is presented. Outlier detection is a necessary pre-screening procedure
in order to ensure reliable estimates of stochastic properties of the observations in the combined least-squares adjustment
(via rescaling of covariance matrices) and to ensure that the final vertical motion model is not corrupted and/or distorted
by erroneous data. Results from this study indicate that typical data snooping methods are inadequate in dealing with these
heterogeneous data sets and their stochastic properties. Using simulated vertical displacement rates, it is demonstrated that
a large variety of outliers (random scattered and adjacent, as well as jointly influential) can be dealt with if an iterative
re-weighting least-squares adjustment is combined with a robust median estimator. Moreover, robust estimators are efficient
in areas weakly constrained by the data, where even high quality observations may appear to be erroneous if their estimates
are largely influenced by outliers. Four combined models for the vertical motion in the region of the Great Lakes are presented.
The computed vertical displacements vary between − 2 mm/year (subsidence) along the southern shores and 3 mm/year (uplift)
along the northern shores. The derived models provide reliable empirical constraints and error bounds for postglacial rebound

Contributions of terrestrial and GRACE data to the study of the secular geoid changes in North America 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper tests and discusses different statistical methods for modelling secular rates of change of the geoid in North America. In particular, we use the method of principal component/empirical orthogonal functions (PC/EOF) analysis to model the geoid rates from Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite data. As demonstrated, the PC/EOF analysis is useful for studying the contributions from different signals (mainly residual hydrology signals and leakage effects) to the GRACE-derived geoid rates. The PC/EOF analysis leads to smaller geoid rates compared to the conventional least-squares fitting of a trend and annual and semi-annual cycles to the time series of the spherical harmonic coefficients. This is because we filter out particular spatiotemporal modes of the regional geoid changes.We apply the method of least-squares collocation with parameters to combine terrestrial data (GPS vertical velocities from the Canadian Base Network and terrestrial gravity rates from the Canadian Gravity Standardization Net) with the GRACE-derived vertical motion to obtain again the geoid rates. The combined model has a peak geoid rate of 1.4 mm/year in the southeastern area of Hudson Bay contrary to the GRACE-derived geoid rates that show a large peak of 1.6–1.7 mm/year west of Hudson Bay. We demonstrate that the terrestrial data, which have a longer time span than the GRACE data, are important for constraining the GRACE-derived secular signal in the areas that are well sampled by the data. 相似文献

Precise leveling, tide-gauge recordings and time series from continuous GPS stations are all sources of information about the ongoing postglacial land uplift in Fennoscandia. This article describes how to gather these three sources of data together in a least-squares collocation adjustment in order to calculate uplift rates, as well as new heights for the benchmarks in the leveling network. The estimated reliability of the resulting uplift model is in general better than 0.4 mm/year, decreasing in areas of fewer data.A smoother and extended version of the land uplift model described here is used in the adjustment of the new height system in Sweden (RH 2000) under the name RH 2000 LU. Later on, the name was changed to NKG2005LU. The Finnish Geodetic Institute (FGI) has decided to use the same model when they calculate their new height system, N2000. 相似文献

The postglacial eruption rate for the Mount Adams volcanic field is ∼0.1 km3/k.y., four to seven times smaller than the average rate for the past 520 k.y. Ten vents have been active since the last main
deglaciation ∼15 ka. Seven high flank vents (at 2100–2600 m) and the central summit vent of the 3742-m stratocone produced
varied andesites, and two peripheral vents (at 2100 and 1200 m) produced mildly alkalic basalt. Eruptive ages of most of these
units are bracketed with respect to regional tephra layers from Mount Mazama and Mount St. Helens. The basaltic lavas and
scoria cones north and south of Mount Adams and a 13-km-long andesitic lava flow on its east flank are of early postglacial
age. The three most extensive andesitic lava-flow complexes were emplaced in the mid-Holocene (7–4 ka). Ages of three smaller
Holocene andesite units are less well constrained. A phreatomagmatic ejecta cone and associated andesite lavas that together
cap the summit may be of latest Pleistocene age, but a thin layer of mid-Holocene tephra appears to have erupted there as
well. An alpine-meadow section on the southeast flank contains 24 locally derived Holocene andesitic ash layers intercalated
with several silicic tephras from Mazama and St. Helens. Microprobe analyses of phenocrysts from the ash layers and postglacial
lavas suggest a few correlations and refine some age constraints. Approximately 6 ka, a 0.07-km3 debris avalanche from the southwest face of Mount Adams generated a clay-rich debris flow that devastated >30 km2 south of the volcano. A gravitationally metastable 2-to 3-km3 reservoir of hydrothermally altered fragmental andesite remains on the ice-capped summit and, towering 3 km above the surrounding
lowlands, represents a greater hazard than an eruptive recurrence in the style of the last 15 k.y.

Geochemical analysis of sedimentary organic matter in recent lacustrine sediments appears to be a useful tool in providing information concerning past environmental conditions. However, such analysis is often made without knowing the geochemical characteristics of the organic matter derived from the watershed and, more explicitly, its soils. The present work deals with (i) a geochemical investigation (Rock-Eval pyrolysis) of soil organic matter sampled in a lake watershed, and (ii) the study of the sedimentary organic matter trapped in the lake deposits. The research was conducted on Chaillexon Lake which was created by a rock collapse that dammed the palaeovalley of the Doubs River about 12 000 years ago. Since this event, the sediment trap provides a continuous palaeoclimatic record for the Postglacial period. Results obtained lead to two main conclusions. First, the variability of Rock-Eval pyrolysis values observed in soils modifies the common interpretation given to these parameters in the characterization of sedimentary organic matter. Indeed, variations in these parameters point not only to varying proportions of terrestrial and lacustrine organic matter in a lacustrine infilling but also to variations of the terrestrial supply linked with the evolution of vegetal cover in the catchment. The second conclusion is that the story of the Chaillexon lacustrine system is marked by a rather sudden soil and forest development at the Preboreal–Boreal transition (9000 BP ). Across the plate boundary zone in south central Alaska, tectonic strain rates are high in a region that includes large glaciers undergoing wastage (glacier retreat and thinning) and surges. For the coastal region between the Bering and Malaspina Glaciers, the average ice mass thickness changes between 1995 and 2000 range from 1 to 5 m/year. These ice changes caused solid Earth displacements in our study region with predicted values of −10 to 50 mm in the vertical and predicted horizontal displacements of 0–10 mm at variable orientations. Relative to stable North America, observed horizontal rates of tectonic deformation range from 10 to 40 mm/year to the north–northwest and the predicted tectonic uplift rates range from approximately 0 mm/year near the Gulf of Alaska coast to 12 mm/year further inland. The ice mass changes between 1995 and 2000 resulted in discernible changes in the Global Positioning System (GPS) measured station positions of one site (ISLE) located adjacent to the Bagley Ice Valley and at one site, DON, located south of the Bering Glacier terminus. In addition to modifying the surface displacements rates, we evaluated the influence ice changes during the Bering glacier surge cycle had on the background seismic rate. We found an increase in the number of earthquakes (ML≥2.5) and seismic rate associated with ice thinning and a decrease in the number of earthquakes and seismic rate associated with ice thickening. These results support the hypothesis that ice mass changes can modulate the background seismic rate.During the last century, wastage of the coastal glaciers in the Icy Bay and Malaspina region indicates thinning of hundreds of meters and in areas of major retreat, maximum losses of ice thickness approaching 1 km. Between the 1899 Yakataga and Yakutat earthquakes (Mw=8.1, 8.1) and prior to the 1979 St. Elias earthquake (Ms=7.2), the plate interface below Icy Bay was locked and tectonic strain accumulated. We used estimated ice mass change during the 1899–1979 time period to calculate the change in the fault stability margin (FSM) prior to the 1979 St. Elias earthquake. Our results suggest that a cumulative decrease in the fault stability margin at seismogenic depths, due to ice wastage over 80 years, was large, up to 2 MPa. Ice wastage would promote thrust faulting in events such as the 1979 earthquake and subsequent aftershocks. 相似文献

挪威北海北部在末次冰期存在较大范围的冰盖,其冰盖的加载和卸载会对地表变形和内部应力调整产生重要影响.本文基于Maxwell黏弹性本构关系,根据初应力法自主开发了一套Maxwell黏弹性体有限元程序,它可以考虑重力和构造加载、地球介质弹性的纵向和横向不均匀性以及黏性的分层性,可以计算冰川载荷变化引起的地球表面变形及内部应力状态的变化.利用它研究了挪威北海北部1.1 Ma以来的冰川载荷变化、特别是两万多年以来冰盖的消退引起的地表冰后回弹.结果表明,自2万年以来,冰后回弹效应在冰盖载荷变化的不同阶段呈现明显的时空变化,现今地表垂直变化速率为几个毫米/年,与观测结果一致.下地壳和上地幔的黏弹性松弛效应明显,上地壳的应力状态在现今海岸线两侧存在差异性,水平和垂直正应力变化可达几十兆帕,剪应力变化有一个先增加后迅速减小至零的过程,与古地震、现今地震时空分布及应力测量结果也比较符合,研究结果有助于加深对冰后回弹的动力学过程的认识. 相似文献
