Abstract:During the recent 1983 eruption of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii, a field measurement of electrical resistivity was made in an 1118°C molten lava flow. A probe containing a four electrode. Wenner aray was inserted into the molten basaltic lava flow at a point about 100 m from the erupting vent. The probe indicated an electrical resistivity of approximately 40 ohm-m for the freshly-erupted molten lava. This value is consistent with existing, but sparce, laboratory data for molten rock in this temperature range. This work was performed by Sandia National Laboratories supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under contract number DE-ACO4-76DPO0789.
