Abstract:Foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils was considered as evidence indicating transgression and used in some publication of paleoecology and paleogeography. It was also stated that the Mesozoic source rock of eastern China was transgression deposits. Foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils associated with ostracoda was discovered from the Neogene Quaternary terrestrial saline deposits in northwestern China. They are proved not to be origin of transgression from the view of paleoecology and paleogeography. The illustration shows that the distribution of these fossils was mainly controled by the saline lake in the arid climate. Since Miocene the pro saline aquatic biota including of ostracoda, foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils developed along with the eastward expansion of saline lakes. So it is not approciated to regard them as evidence of transgression. According to the analogous principle of geological realism, it is suggested that there are no large scale deposits of transgression in the Early Tertiary. The rich resources of petroleum must be originated from the terrestrial saline lake or deep lake deposits.
