| Abstract: | Since Professor Yin Zanxun received his degree of doctor of Science in the department of Geology,Lyons University,Prance in 1931,he has devoted to a vast amount of research work for 50 years long and during the same period,shouldered the responsibility of academic and administrative leadership in our country.Totally,150 and more treatises and works were published successively including big volumes of monographs,treatises with new views and discoveries,papers of theoretical significance,works on history of geology,compilations of comprehensive contents,comments on scientific literature,reviews submitted in symposia,reports covering scientific activities,popular science books and articles of sociological importance,etc.Prom the contents of the treatises,his works cover a wide range: in paleontology,mainly dealing with invertebrates and some with vertebrates,plants and trace fossils;in geology,mainly dealing with stratigraphy and also sedimentology,petrology,tectonics,mineral resources,volcanology and karst,etc.;in geography,with hydrology and geomorphology,etc.He has also inquired into problems of astronomy.Concerning the geological periods,he has mainly dealt with the Paleozoic and the Mesozoic,but also interested in the Precambrian and the Quaternary.Prior to the 50s,he engaged in a great amount of geological and paleontological work,among which study on the Silurian stratigraphy in China was thorough and painstaking.He himself went to the field,surveying the sections,collecting fossils and subdividing beds and zones.He worked hard and seriously and many papers on the Silurian were harvested and published.In both 1949 and 1966 he summarized twice the Silurian stratigraphy in China,laying a solid foundation for studying the Silurian of China thenceforth.Beginning from the 60s,he drafted the Project of Stratigraphic Code of China and wrote the explanation of the Code.He sorted over the stratigraphic names in China and the terms of the crustal movements in China,and later,he studied the folding episodes from a stratigraphic viewpoint and pubblished quite a number of papers on plate tectonics. |
