Abstract:Traditional methods for getting mean size of grain or sediment are derived from some mathematical transform, hence these methods make the mean size lose its physical significance to some extent. This paper discusses some inadequacies of these methods and introduces a new calculative method of mean size which is called equal volume and surface area one. This method has a clearly physical significance and bestows more plenty physical connotation on size parameter. After using this method. we have obtained more satisfactory results than using the traditional ones. Although this method is not quite perfect, anyway it is based on describing physical characteristics of grains.It smash the pure mathematical transform shackles. We believe it will get a wider use than traditional mean parameters.
