Abstract:Two giant basins were developed on the unified SE Asian continent after Indosinian movement. A continental basin was formed in the border area between Thailand, Cambodia and Laos during Late Triassic and Early Jurassic and stretched to Simao-Lanping area in Middle Jurassic. The Late Mesozoic red beds could be well correlated in the basin, but the boundary fault in Eastern Thailand seems to act a more important role in the basin development. The unified basin might be disintegrated in Late Cretaceous by the Yanshan movement. A marine basin formed in Sumatra, the Malay Peninsula and the border region of Thailand and Burma during Early Jurassic and extended to the westmost part of Yunnan during Middle Jurassic. Between both these basins an uplift has occurred and might be enlarged during Creta-ceous with closing of the marine basin. However, the uplift in West Yunnan might be gentle, sometimes only a submarine one.The Tertiary basins in Thailand are clearly controlled by the Yanshanian tectonic framework. The N-S oriented grabens in West Yunnan and North-Central Thailand may reflect a tensile stress field which is marked by opening of the Gulf of Thailand. The rifting might become weakened and later northwards, namely, the rifts in the Gulf and Central Plain were developed mainly since Oligocene, with Miocene volcanism and middle Miocene marine sediments found in the Gulf; the rifts in Northern Thailand developed mainly in Miocene, with lacustrine fills and Pliocene basalts; in Western Yunnan, only isolated down-faulted basins developed principally in Pliocene, filled with lakebog facies sediments and limited volcan-ics. In addition to the S-N tension faults, the dextral NW-SE strike-slip faults in Thailand might promote the basin development. The Quaternary superposed basins were developed on the Tertiary rifts in the Central and Northern Thailand. The Chao Phraya Basin may be the best one. The similar basins can beobserved in Western Yunnan.
