Abstract:The palynological study on the Quaternary sediments of 42 cores in the region of the Yangtze River Delta and the sections of 4 relics had been done since 1960. Palynological assemblages from the region of the Yangtze River Delta, showing obviously common characteristics but with slight differences because of the vast areas covered can be divided into five spores and pollen zones and three subzones in ascendant order:
  1. Quercus alienc-Pinus-Cupressaceae—Chenopodiaceae spores and pollen zone reflecting the cool, then cold and dry climate—Preboreal.
  2. Quercus dentata-Quercus acutissima-Pinus-Castanea-Artemisia spores and pollen zone reflecting the temperate and cool, but a little dry climate—Boreal.
  3. Quercus glauca-Castanopsis-Myrica-Castanea spores and pollen zone reflecting the hot and moist climate—Atlantic.
  4. Quercus acutissima-Pinus-Castanea-Quercus glauca- Chenopodiaceae spores and pollen zone reflecting the warm, and a little dry climate—Subboreal.
  5. Quercus acutissima-Castanea-Quercus glauca-Liquidambar spores and pollen zone, containing more pollen of evergreen broadleaved trees in the south, dominated by pollen of deciduous broadleaved trees in the north, reflecting the climate then (similar to that now), considered as Subatlantic. It can be further divided into three spores and pollen subzones:
  1. Quercus glauca-Quercus acutissima-Castanea-Pinus spores and pollen subzone.
  2. Pinus-Ulmus-Quercus acutissima-Cupressaceae spores and pollen subzone.
  3. Pinus-Quercus glauca-Ulmus-Castanea-Liquidambar spores and pollen subzone.
The lower limit of the Holocene period in the region of the Yangtze River Delta is also discussed in this paper. We consider that it is suitable for the limit to be dated 12,000 yr. B.P.
