| Abstract: | This is a brief review of the current understanding of the role of benthic heterotrophic bacteria in sediment diagenesis, material recycle and energy flow, their distribution and properties, as well as the role of heterotrophic bacteria in iron limited ocean ecosystems. The general methods for measuring marine bacterial biomass and productivity are discussed. Finally, subjects for further research in this field are suggested. |
