| Abstract: | Arid and semi-arid areas occupy 52. 5% of the territory of China, which include the total land of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, the most part of Tibet Autonomous Region, and some parts of Qinghai, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Hebei provinces. Under the arid climatical environment, the arid and semi -arid areas are characterized by less biological species,shortage of water resources, fragile ecological environment, dull geographical landscape,etc. Since Nuomin Nature Reserve, the first nature reserve in arid area in China, was built by state in oroqen County in the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 1959, 65 nature reserves in various grades have been built in succesion in the vast arid and semi -arid areas in China. This paper discusses the problems of construction, ex ploitation and utilization of nature reserves in arid areas based on the analysis on the char acteristics and conditions of the nature reserves. It is pointed out that the development of nature reserves can not be limited by the simple protection, The construction, manage ment and protection of nature reserves must be united with their development, exploita tion and utilization. Under the structure of market - oriented economy, more attention should be paid to the potential exploitation value and multiple functions of the nature re serves in arid areas. Meanwhile, the connection between the construction of the nature re serves in arid areas and the development of West China must be strengthened so as to seek a way to bring about a joint development of the nature reserves and ecomomy of West China. |
