Abstract: | Fifty-two heterotrophic bacteria isolated from the deep-sea hydrothermal vent polychaete, Alvinella pompejana, were tested for susceptibility to cadmium, zinc, copper, arsenate and silver ions by an agar dilution technique. Metal resistance was exhibited 96% of the total isolates. The frequencies of resistance to heavy metals were: copper, 88%; zinc and arsenic, 58%; cadmium, 38%. However, strains demonstrated a high susceptibility to silver. 71% of the strains tested were multiresistant to metals. |
