Abstract: | The x-ray photoelectron spectrum of Mn(VI) is closely similar to that of uv-irradiated MnO2, previously reported to simulate the Viking gas exchange reaction. β-MnO2 is the thermodynamically stable form of manganese on the surface of Mars, and MnO2 abundances estimated from shergottite, nakhlite, and chassignite iron/manganese ratios are sufficient to account for the oxidant buffer capacity observed by Viking. |
