Abstract: | The equidistance method of delimiting maritime boundaries is widely used in varied forms (simplified, modified, or true) to produce an equitable result for the settlement of areas of sovereign jurisdiction in the water column of adjacent coastal states. Equidistance lines have always been constructed manually, needing hours of tedious drafting. The manual procedure is not only repetitive in nature and slow, but the accuracy of the resultant line cannot be assured. This paper discusses an algorithm developed for the automation of the construction of equidistance lines. Some characteristics of the program are highlighted in the discussion and working cases provided to demonstrate program capabilities and cost effectiveness. |
