Abstract:The role played by geological structures is one of the recent advances in the genesis of salt deposition, and more attention is paid especially to the development of rift. Meso-Cenozoic salt basins spread widely in Chinese territory, and their relation with rift and block fault is discussed briefly in this paper. Structural control of recent salt lake is known in West China, where neo-tectonic movement is active. Chaidam basin, the famous basin with large salt lakes, is controlled by deep faults on the north, south and west sides. High angle reversed faults divide the lakes in the basin into groups, and systems of minor faults control individual lakes. Likely, it is known that 390 salt lakes in North Tibet plateau are formed under the control of three parallel reversed fault zones of latitudinal trend and eight grabens of longitudinal elongation. Salt deposits in Meso-Cenozoic basins are found in four regions, with characteristics quite different from each other: in east provinces along the coast, 29 salt basins scatter in a belt extending from North China to the side of South China Sea, where salt was deposited in basins controlled by normal faults in the taphrogen rift formed on the margin of the passive plate of Asia.In West Yunnan province, salt basins of Paleocene Epoch are developed in the impactogen rift, with reversed and thrust fault of different ages. In Northwest China, Meso-Cenozoic salt basins and intermontane basins of ranges of east-west trend are controlled by thrust faults. Another group of Meso-Cenozoic salt basins is formed in the middle part of Chinese territory, scattered in a belt from Helanshan in the north to central Yunnan, where Meso-Cenozoic salt basins are formed in intracontinental rift or along the down throw side of deep fault. Geological structure, especially fault is one of the controlling factors of the history of formation and evolution of salt basin and environment of salt deposition. On the other hand, it is important for the origin of salt, whether it is the result of weathering of surface rock or rising from underground of various depth. At a result, the characteristics of Meso-Cenozoic salt deposits in China are quite different from those which have been suggested to be deposited in a quiet, shallow basin, like lagoon or desert basin. The significance of structural control of Meso-Cenozoic salt basin may concluded as follows: ( 1 ) the unstability of the basin, and ( 2 ) the multiple source of salt material. These may be of profound interest not only for Meso-Cenozoic salt basin as stated in this paper.
