Abstract:Complex permittivity is an important parameter for practical application of GPR and borehole radar. The enough distinction of EM parameters (such as permittivities) between target ores and surrounding rocks is the pre-condition of surface and borehole radar exploration. For permittivity measurement of ores and rocks, coaxial methods are commonly used. Open-ended coaxial probe technique is one of these methods. Compared with other techniques, this method is more convenient, faster and easier in sample preparation. The key issue of this technique is the closeness of probe contacting with medium. In this paper, we use quasi-static model to build the relationship of relative permittivity εr and reflection coefficient Γ, which is measured by a vector network analyzer (Agilent E5071B). We use three mediums (i.e. air firm, short circle, de-ionized water) for calibration. The complex permittivities are then determined by optimization algorithm. For contrast, the normal coaxial line method has very difficult sample manufacture. At last we use open-ended method to determine permitivities of several practical rock and metal-ore samples, and then display the permitivities of samples from some samples of igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks. From the analysis of data, we find this method is quite suitable for metal-ore testing.
