| Abstract: | The present review is concerned with the various theories of the density distribution in the interior of the earth as well as the latest determination of the earth's mean density. Particular attention is paid to the two models of Bullen, since they will probably play an important role in the elucidation of many geophysical problems and especially in any hypothesis of the earth's origin. Bullen's later works since 1950 and those of Ramsey, Elsasser and others have not been included as they contain elements which are more hypothetical and controversial and seem to need more verifications. The earth's mean density are calculated according to Jeffreys's data of the figure of the earth. But since the latter question is at present still in a verst incomplete state, the result must at best be regarded as tentative. |
