| Abstract: | A ciliate infection ascribed to the species Paranophrys carcini spiralis was found in the artificial over-wintering parent prawn, Penaeus chinensis. The infections proved lethal as ciliates multiplied to high densities in the blood and tissues,especial,ly the gill tissue, causing lesion, degeneration and necrosis. Infections alsoled to death caused by comsumption of all hemocytes. All infected prawns hadwounds through the exoskeleton which probably proved a portal of entry. Thenature of Paranophys infections in prawns as an opportunistic pathogen of adisease in artificial over-wintering prawn is discussed. |
