| Abstract: | The area of the arid lands in Northwest China occupies about one fouth of the total area in China. Northwest China is an ideal region for developing agriculture in the future. The limited water resources, however, restrict the agricultural development. The water consumption of agriculture takes about 90% of the total at present. The open irrigation systems and unsuitable irrigation ways are commonly used. The loss of water carrier is serious.The advantages and potentialities for developing agriculture in Northwest China are analyzed. To develop the water-saving agriculture is the key for raising irrigation benefit,enlarging irrigation area and improving ecological environment. For this purpose, some measures for developing water-saving irrigated agriculture in Northwest China are presented and evaluated in the paper. |
