| Abstract: | Basic pillow lavas from northeastern Newfoundland are shown to be chemically similar to basaltic komatiites and ocean-floor basalts. New trace element data presented for basaltic komatiites indicate that they were derived from a magma more primitive than that producing ocean-floor basalts. A model for the derivation of basaltic komatiite by extensive partial melting of pyrolitic upper mantle at sites of plate separation is proposed. |
