Abstract: | This paper reviews research results on the floatability of Polish hard coals as a function of their grade of metamorphism. The materials used for this were species of pure carbonic rocks. Natural floatability as well as different kinds of activated floatability were determined. It was shown that under equal conditions for all tested coals natural and activated floatabilities increased proportionally to the loss of oxygen (active functional oxygen groups) in the coal. It was observed that, in spite of the lack of functional oxygen groups, coals with the highest grade of metamorphism showed a decrease in floatability. The probable reason lies in the occurrence of π electrons and the important susceptibility for polarization. Using the optimal conditions for any given coal, all coals tested presented a high floatability. |
