| Abstract: | Terminal oxidation of plant carbohydrates has been compared in Southampton Water and in the Vellar Estuary on the south-east Indian coast. Rates of glucose breakdown are higher in temperate than in tropical waters. The high rates of bacterial activity in Southampton Water may be due to urban bacterial pollution. |
