Abstract:To explain both origin and outcome of disasters (lsquonaturalrsquo, lsquotechnicalrsquo, and lsquowar-bornersquo), as well as social action during disasters proper, a macrosociological model of internal causation is introduced (lsquoPERDUErsquo). It consists of six stages of possible, and of most likely paths of social change between these six (lsquoPeace is foundedrsquo, lsquoEveryday routinersquo, lsquoRising class strugglersquo, lsquoDisasters strikersquo, lsquoUnconditional surrender of collective defencersquo, and lsquoEvaporation of common valuesrsquo). The stages are developed by making use of three dimensions of social change (lsquorapidityrsquo, lsquoradicalityrsquo, and lsquoritualityrsquo), and described.
