Abstract: | The northern Dabieshan metamorphic terrain (NDT) is an analogue of an Andean-type magmatic arc. The predominant rock type is a trondhjemitic-tonalitic-granodioritic (TTG) gneiss with bodies of meta-ultramafic-gabbroic rocks, basic granulite, and metasedimentary horizons. The TTG gneisses occupy about 70-80 vol% of the metamorphic rock outcrop and constitute two gneiss domes. Several approximately E-W- or NW-SE-trending ductile deforma- tion belts cut through the TTG gneisses and are especially developed in the northern and southern margins of the NDT and around the domes. Most ultramafic-mafic rocks occur as lenses in ductile deformation belts. Metasedimentary horizons consist of marble, biotite quartz schist, metaquartzite, metamorphosed calc-silicate rocks, fine-grained biotite gneiss, banded iron formation, and amphibolite. Petrographic and geochemical studies show that: (1) meta- morphic rocks in the NDT underwent amphibolite-granulite facies metamorphism, and no eclogite-facies high-pressure mineral relicts were found in any rocks; and (2) ultramafic-mafic rocks do not have the petrological and geochemical characteristics of ophiolitic rocks; they appear to be an island-arc ultramafic-gabbroic intrusion. The limited isotopic data indicate that the northern Dabieshan terrain is possibly a Paleozoic magmatic arc. The data in this paper provide some implications for formation and exhumation of ultra-high pressure metamorphic (UHPM) rocks. |
