Ammonoid suture line terminology |
| |
Abstract: | The suture line terminology adopted by Soviet paleontologists is defended, in response to a critical article by Schindewolf (1963). The Russian terminology recognizes six basic lobes; ventral, omnilateral, dorsal, umbonal, external lateral, and internal lateral (their symbols: V O D U L I). This system, based on the observed derivation and development of these lobes in early forms, takes into consideration not only the first normally coiled ammonoids, but all ammonoids, including their ancestors, the bactritoids. Advantages of this system over the one used by German paleontologists are pointed out.—M. Gordon, Jr. |
