The division of natural carbon compounds in biogenetic and nonbiogenetic substances according to their C13/C12 ratios is questioned and discussed in the light of new measurements and calculations.Graphites can be divided in two ranges of C13/C12 ratios. A biogenetic and nonbiogenetic origin appears to be possible because of isotopic exchange reactions. The isotopic compositions of synthetic diamonds obtained from graphite are compared with those of diamond and graphite from meteorites. The biogenetic or nonbiogenetic origin of magmatic and metamorphic carbon is discussed. The genesis of hydrocarbons by nonbiogenetic reactions is very likely.
