Abstract:One of the most important problems in applied geophysics is to extract velocities of compressional and shear waves, using the observed data collected at the Earth's surface or in boreholes. Unfortunately, in a typical seismic experiment, we do not have enough information to uniquely recover seismic velocities as functions ofx, y, andz. Thus, in the paper, a simplified model of the Earth (a stack of horizontal homogeneous layers) is considered and a critical discussion of modern techniques for processing reflection arrivals is presented.
