Abstract:The vertical components of 4695 records obtained by the K-NET and KiK-net stations from subduction slab earthquakes in Japan were used to develop a model of damping modification factor(DMF)for displacement spectrum. Site class based on site period was used as the site response parameter and a fixed effects method was used to derive the model coefficents. The DMF model accounts for the effects of spectral period,damping ratio and site conditions and the model can be used to adjust the design response spectrum not associated with earthquake source and distance parameters.We used quadratic function of the damping ratio in the logarithm scale to fit and regress the original data. Next,we used a random effects model to separate the within-event,between-event residual and to evaluate the effects of source,pathandsite parameters. The distributions of residual suggest that the use of magnitude and focal depth can improve the DMF modeland the use of source distance can also improve the DMF model performance. These analyses suggested that the source effect on the DMF model is less than the path effect whereas the site effect is betweenthe source and the path effects. When the period is less than 1.1s,the error caused by the site effect is greater than the error caused by the source effect;after 1.1s,the opposite is true.
