Abstract:
Small amplitude water waves propagating from a narrow rectangular channel into a wider rectangular channel are examined to determine the reflection coefficients and the diffraction patterns associated with the channel transition. An eigenfunction expansion method is used for the full range of channel transitions, while a variational solution is developed for the case when only planar waves are reflected in the upwave channel. Significant reflections occur when the wavelength of the waves in the wider channel corresponds to multiples of the channel width.
