Abstract:We report the first time-series of seasonal change in the concentration of mercury in sea water, and its speciation and mechanism of replenishment by sulphide chemistry in an intermittently reducing coastal fjord. We observed total Hg levels in sea water as low as 0.3 ng l−1 in the oxygenated waters of Saanich Inlet, British Columbia, as well as a correlation of seasonal buildup of Hg and sulphide in the bottom waters between March and August through diffusive supplies from the anoxic sea water/sediment interface.
