Abstract:This paper studies the influence of strain rate on the reinforced concrete columns.The OPENSEES,a finite element analysis software,is employed to simulate the reinforced concrete column fiber model based on the flexibility method.Through numerical simulations,it is validated that the effect of strain rate is magnified along with the increasing axial load ratio;the sensitivity of the strain rate effect is decreased when the reinforced concrete strength or longitudinal reinforced ratio increases.Furthermore,the dynamic behavior of the reinforced concrete column is considered when it is subjected to earthquake.It is shown that the mechanical properties of the reinforced concrete column is similar to those under monotonic loading.It is implied that the loading rate is a significant factor in the dynamic behavior of the reinforced concrete column.In the conventional design of reinforced concrete columns,the failure load under the condition of monotonic loading can be increased by about 10 percent,even more than 20 percent when considering the strain rate of materials.Therefore,the study on strain rate effect for reinforced concrete column is important to structure damage under earthquake.
