Abstract:This paper reviews recent progress and problems in modeling the thermohaline circulation of the world ocean by use of z-coordinate ocean general circulation models. Discussions focus on four issues: sea surface forcing, mixing in the deep ocean interior, eddy-induced tracer transport, and bottom boundary layer processes. Although some widely used techniques and parameterizations deal with these issues, some aspects are still overlooked and more sophistication is certainly required. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
