Abstract: | This paper reviews recent progress and problems in modeling the thermohaline circulation of the world ocean by use of z-coordinate ocean general circulation models. Discussions focus on four issues: sea surface forcing, mixing in the deep ocean
interior, eddy-induced tracer transport, and bottom boundary layer processes. Although some widely used techniques and parameterizations
deal with these issues, some aspects are still overlooked and more sophistication is certainly required.
