Abstract:This article examines the role of regional policy in the light of the significant changes in the economic geography of Norway in the last thirty years. It focuses on the way in which regional policy has become the major instrument of government policy for the protection of the settlement pattern inherited from a previous period of industrial development. The author explains how national wealth from North Sea oil has made this possible and speculates on the future prospects of this policy.
