Abstract:Based on remote sensing and geographical information systems techniques,using multi-periods of Landsat image and Digital Elevation Model,the glaciers of Nyingchi Municipality in Tibet Autonomous Region are mapped and the variation of glaciers during 1990—2000 are studied in this paper.Result shows that glacierized area decreased about 568.71 km2,with an average retreat rate of 56.87 km2·a-1 from 1990 to 2000.Studying the representative glaciers shows that some glaciers were increasing and some were decreasing,with the principal tendency of retreating.Studying the variation of representative glaciers’ terminus indicates that glaciers terminus shrunk about 172.65 m during 1990—2000,with an average retreating rate of 17.27 m·a-1.
