Abstract:Spatial and temporal variations in the pressure, temperature, and water vapor content in the atmosphere introduce significant tropospheric delay into interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) data, which is one of the main limitations in high precision InSAR applications. Recent studies have shown that global atmospheric reanalysis products have great potential for mitigating large-scale tropospheric delay, motivating us to further explore the effectiveness and robustness of the atmospheric reanalysis products. In this paper, we describe an algorithm that uses atmospheric reanalysis for correcting tropospheric delay in InSAR data. We focus on two reanalysis products in our study, ERA-Interim reanalysis and North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR). We examine the efficiency of these two atmospheric reanalysis by processing a set of interferometric SAR images (N=51) acquired by ENVISAT ASAR over Southern California, USA from May 2005 to September 2010. We validated our approach by comparing these products to atmospheric delay measurements derived from the passive multispectral imager Medium-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS), onboard the ENVISAT satellite. We found that:(1) the hydrostatic contribution to interferometric phase delay must be taken into account, and this component can be precisely predicted by using reanalysis products; (2) comparisons with MERIS show that the tropospheric delay predicted from atmospheric reanalysis products have similar performance as MERIS; (3) although NARR has a higher spatial and temporal resolution and can reflect the path delay with a finer scale, we find that the overall performance of NARR has no obvious advantages over ERA-Interim; (4) in cases where stratified atmospheric artifacts dominate interferograms, these atmospheric conditions are effectively reproduced by the reanalysis products, but these reanalysis products are not suited for estimating turbulent patterns in single interferograms. We conclude that the atmospheric reanalysis is suitable for predicting the stratified tropospheric delay in interferograms thus improving the accuracy of topography and deformation mapping applications. The advantages of atmospheric reanalysis are threefold:free, global coverage, and daily availability.
