Abstract: | The distribution of uranium in the minerals and rocks of the Skaergaard, Rhum and Bushveld layered igneous intrusions has been investigated by the delayed neutron analytical technique. The uranium concentration in the minerals depends, in part, upon the nature of the cumulate from which they were separated. In those minerals from adcumulates, pyroxene contains the most uranium and olivine the least. The uranium content of a basic igneous cumulate is shown to be useful as an indicator of the relative amount of mesostasis in the rock, provided uranium-bearing cumulus minerals such as apatite are absent. The amount of mesostasis sometimes changes rapidly from one layer to another. |
