Abstract:Prediction of safe levels of effluent discharge have in the past been largely based on the results of short term acute toxicity tests (LC5 0s). Such tests are usually carried out in unnatural experimental conditions, and in consequence the results are of only limited value. There is a need to enlarge the concept of the routine bioassay test to include quantitative measurement of the effects of pollutants on behaviour, physiology and metabolism. This paper describes a simple rapid bioassay test in which the effect of pollutants on the burrowing of the bivalve Tellina tenuis has been used as a quantitative measure of pollutant effect.
