Abstract:Laboratory data shows that the reaction of protons with methane proceeds at thermal ion energies to give both CH3+ and CH4+ ions in the ratio CH3+CH4+ = 1.5 ± 0.3. The overall rate constant for the reaction is 3.8 ± 0.3 × 10?9 cm3/sec. This reaction may lead to the formation of hydrocarbon ions in the lower ionosphere of Jupiter, and the significance of this process for formation of hydrocarbons and HCN in the atmosphere of Jupiter is discussed.
