Abstract:Concentrations of Cu, As, Pb, Zn and Ag (but not Cd, Co, Fe, Mn and Hg) in the tissues of benthic algae (Fucus vesiculosus) correlate significantly with concentrations in sediment. Metals which complex most strongly with algal tissues show the strongest correlations of algal tissue and sediment. Scavenging these metals from particulates may be an important source of uptake by the algae. If so, concentrations of Cu, As, Pb, Zn and Ag in algal tissues may not be good indicators of concentrations of these metals in solution.
