Abstract:The aim of the present paper has been to investigate the effects, on radial velocities of the components of close binary systems, of atmospheric gas motions caused by mutual irradiation of the two stars. Such motions can produce systematic differences between the observed radial velocity and that of the centre of mass of the respective star, varying with the phase, and give rise to spurious, deformations of the star's radial-velocity curve which have nothing to do with its axial rotation or orbital motion.Quantitative determination of this effect will be given for the simplified case in which the symmetry of gas motion can be described in terms of zonal harmonics of arbitrary degree, and a brief comparison made with the observed radial velocities of the B9-component of the eclipsing system U Cephei, which is known to move in a circular orbit, but exhibits a radial-velocity curve of marked skew-symmetry.
