Abstract: | An analytic investigation is made of rays from a source in a magneto-ionic medium for which the magnetic field H and the electron density vary, in a Cartesian co-ordinate system Oxyz, with x alone. The case Hz = 0 is considered in some detail. It is shown that rays in the xy-plane may be focused, and that interference can occur. The geomagnetic field is then represented by a model for which Hy is proportional to x, and the magnetic field lines are parabolas. Observations and theories of magnetospheric chorus, in particular of the gap near one-half the equatorial electron gyrofrequency, are discussed in relation to this model. |
