| Abstract: | Linear dunes arc the most widespread dune types in global sand seas, and also occupy the greater part of main deserts in the southern hemisphere. R. A. Bagnold (1941) first advanced the developmental model and grain-size distributional characteristic. of seif dune,and inferred the developmental mcchanics of linear dune and inner the developmental mechanics of linear dune and inner structure or the seif. In early stage or 1960's, USSR's aeolian geomorphologists discovered the longitudinal movement and lateral migration laws of the seif, which were further perfected by the study of H. Tsoar (1978), Zhu Zhenda (1981) and I. Livingstone (1986)etc. E. D. Mckee (1966) and H. Tsoar (1982) deeply uncovered the inner structure characteristics of the seif. All achievements mentioned above indicated that Bagnold's structure pattern of the seir by inference might be wrong, and Bagnold's development theory or linear dune (i.e. helical roll vortices theory) is being given a challenge. We have comprehensively reviewed some new advances in study of the linear dune in this paper. |
