Abstract: | The geochemical balance of carbon in the ocean is considered for the conditions of constant carbonate alkalinity. It is shown
that the intrabasin processes result in the annual transformation of 487 million t of organic carbon into calcium-magnesium
carbonates, which is accompanied by the extraction of 1628 million t of calcium from silicates. It is concluded that the hypothesis
of the reverse weathering based upon the notion of the inversion of the mineral formation processes in the ocean against the
overland weathering processes requires a substantial correction. |
