Abstract:The regularity of deformation and failure of a rock mass under engineering loading may be considered as a theoritical basis to evaluate the stability of the rock mass. It is recognized that the stability of a rock mass is mainly governed by its internal structure surface, especially by the weak surface. This paper is thereby an attempt to describe genetic types of the structure surface and its characteristics and to consider the structure as a fundamental factor controlling physio-mechanical behaviour of a rock mass. Moreover, the structures of rock masses have been newly classified into four types. All mentioned above are helpful for further studying in engineering geology and developing of engineering geomechanics. The stability of rock mass also discussed in this paper from view point of rock structure.
